Intuitive Pastel - how to....
Using chalk pastel on white pastel paper. begin by applying large swirls of colour in two basic contrasts. Squint the eyes and look into the swirls for the beginnings of shapes and forms. Follow the imagination with these forms, gradually introducing harmonising colours and defining the drawing. This style can also be done by doing the original swirls with acrylic paint diluted to water-colour consistency, on cartridge paper. Then, when it is dry, commence with the pastels over the top. |

Intuitive Charcoal - how to...
For charcoal drawing on white cartridge paper. Using charcoal sticks on cartridge paper, break a willow charcoal stick, turn it side on and begin to apply random areas of tone. Rub the whole lot off with a rag (some of the charcoal will rub off and some won't). Apply another layer of random tonal areas. Rub off. Keep applying and rubbing off. After five or six repeats, swap your light willow stick for a softer, darker charcoal and now choose to 'go with the flow' of tonal areas -darken dark areas and avoid and even rub away tone from the light areas with a putty eraser. Gradually some recognisable forms will begin to emerge. Now keep building on the drawing, increasing contrast between light and dark areas, allowing your imagination to roam. Darkening tonal areas will move back into the paper and light tones will appear to come forward creating your tonal image. You can introduce a white chalk pastel to furhter highlight and white areas tha have become a bit grubby.
